'It was a bit weird:' Mo Farah on Sports Personality of The Year shortlist omission

Andy Murray was voted the winner for the third time in his career.

MO FARAH HAS admitted that he was a bit surprised not to make the top-three shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards for 2016.

The British athlete enjoyed a stunning season last year, in which he defended his 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic titles at the Rio Games, making him the first British track and field athlete to win four Olympic gold medals.

His 10,000m win was particularly astonishing, given that he managed to win despite tumbling to the ground during the race, after getting tangled up with some of the other runners.

He was also made a knight in the New Year Honours alongside Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and fellow Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill, who was made a dame.

Farah finished fourth in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, which eventually went to Andy Murray by public vote at an awards ceremony last month.

Farah said that it felt strange not to at least be named as a top-three nominee.

“It was a bit weird. I just thought, Oh, I might have been in top three. I don’t know if I would have won it but it is not something in my control.”

“Yeah, you do think a little bit like, what can you do? But racing and winning medals for my country is what drives me and no one can take away what I have achieved. That means more than anything else, along with putting my GB vest on.”

Triathlete Alistair Brownlee, and and show jumper Nick Skelton were the other two candidates to finish inside the top three.
